Learning to edit screenshots with snipping tool turns a basic capture into a clear message. The Snipping Tool includes several built‑in editing features. You can draw, highlight, erase, and crop. For advanced edits like arrows and text boxes, you can quickly open your snip in Paint. This guide covers every editing option, from simple pen strokes to professional‑looking annotations.
For the basics of taking screenshots, see our pillar post how to screenshot on pc. This guide assumes you already have a snip open in the Snipping Tool.
After you capture a snip using the Snipping Tool (not Snip & Sketch), the editor opens automatically. If you need to edit an existing screenshot file, open Snipping Tool, click Open (folder icon), and select your image. The same editing tools are available.
The Snipping Tool editor has a simple toolbar with four main tools: Pen, Highlighter, Eraser, and Crop. There is also a Delay option for capturing menus, but that is for capture, not editing.
The Pen tool lets you draw freehand lines on your screenshot. It is useful for circling something, underlining text, or drawing arrows (if you have a steady hand).
How to use:
Tip: For straight lines, hold the Shift key while drawing. The line snaps to horizontal, vertical, or diagonal angles. This is not advertised, but it works in the Snipping Tool.
The Highlighter tool adds a semi‑transparent yellow (or other colors) overlay. It is perfect for emphasizing key words or numbers without covering them completely.
How to use:
Tip: Highlighter lines are thicker than pen lines. You cannot adjust the thickness. If you need a thinner highlight, use the Pen tool with a light color and low opacity (not available – use a lighter color instead).
The Eraser tool removes pen and highlighter marks. It does not erase parts of the original screenshot. Only your drawn annotations disappear.
How to use:
Tip: To erase everything and start over, close the snip without saving and capture again. Alternatively, use Undo (Ctrl + Z) for the last action.
The Crop tool removes parts of the screenshot you do not need. For example, you might crop out your taskbar, browser tabs, or empty space.
How to use:
Tip: Crop before you draw annotations. If you crop after drawing, your annotations may shift or be cut off.
The Snipping Tool does not have built‑in arrows, text boxes, or shapes. However, you can easily send your snip to Paint for advanced editing.
Steps to edit in Paint:
Paint is free and already on your PC. For a full Paint editing guide, see our how to edit screenshots with paint cluster post (placeholder).
After editing, save your file:

For organizing your edited screenshots, see our organizing screenshots on pc guide.

To edit screenshots with snipping tool, you have four simple tools: pen, highlighter, eraser, and crop. For arrows and text, send your snip to Paint. This two‑step process (snip, then Paint) gives you professional annotations without any extra software. Practice on a few test screenshots. Within ten minutes, you will be annotating like a pro.
