Using Game Bar for Screenshots: Windows + G Capture Guide

Understanding using game bar for screenshots is essential when other screenshot tools fail. The Windows Game Bar (Windows Key + G) is designed for capturing gameplay. However, it also works for any app that blocks PrtSc or Snip & Sketch. Netflix, protected video players, and some full‑screen games do not allow standard screenshots. Game Bar bypasses these restrictions in many cases. This guide shows you how to enable Game Bar, take screenshots, find your captures, and customize the save location.

For other screenshot methods, see our pillar post how to screenshot on pc. This guide focuses exclusively on Game Bar.

What Is Game Bar?

Game Bar is a built‑in Windows overlay that appears when you press Windows Key + G. It includes widgets for capturing screenshots and video, recording audio, monitoring performance, and accessing Xbox social features. You do not need an Xbox account to use screenshot features. The tool works on any Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, even without a graphics card.

Microsoft originally designed Game Bar for gamers. But it works in any app. Try it in your web browser, Microsoft Word, or even on your desktop.

How to Enable Game Bar (If Not Already On)

By default, Game Bar is enabled. To verify:

  1. Open Settings (Windows Key + I).
  2. Go to Gaming > Game Bar.
  3. Toggle Record game clips, screenshots, and broadcast using Game Bar to On.

You can also change the keyboard shortcut here. The default is Windows Key + G. Some users change it to Windows Key + Shift + G to avoid conflicts. Keep it simple and stick with the default.

How to Take a Screenshot with Game Bar

Steps:

  1. Open the game, app, or window you want to capture.
  2. Press Windows Key + G. The Game Bar overlay appears.
  3. Look for the Capture widget. It has a camera icon and a record button.
  4. Click the camera icon (Screenshot). Or press Windows Key + Alt + PrtSc (default keyboard shortcut for screenshots within Game Bar).
  5. A notification says “Screenshot saved.”
  6. Press Windows Key + G again or click anywhere outside the overlay to close Game Bar.

That is it. You do not need to paste or save manually. The screenshot is saved automatically.

Where Game Bar Saves Screenshots

Game Bar saves screenshots and video clips in a specific folder:

  • Full path: This PC > Videos > Captures

You can also access it quickly:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Click Videos in the left sidebar.
  3. Open the Captures folder.

Inside, you will see files named Screenshot (1).pngScreenshot (2).png, and so on. These are PNG files – good quality and readable.

For tips on organizing this folder, see our organizing screenshots on pc guide.

How to Change the Save Location for Game Bar Screenshots

By default, Game Bar saves to your main drive (C:). You can change this to another drive or folder.

Steps:

  1. Open Settings (Windows Key + I).
  2. Go to Gaming > Captures.
  3. Under Captures folder, click Open folder.
  4. This opens the current Captures folder in File Explorer.
  5. Navigate up one level (to the Videos folder).
  6. Right‑click on the Captures folder, select Properties.
  7. Go to the Location tab.
  8. Click Move… and choose a new folder (e.g., D:\MyGameShots).
  9. Click Select Folder, then OK, then Yes to move all files.

After this, all future Game Bar screenshots save to your new location.

Note: You cannot change the filename format. Game Bar always uses Screenshot (number).png.

Customizing Game Bar Capture Settings

In Settings > Gaming > Captures, you can adjust:

SettingWhat It Does
Record in the background while I’m playing a gameUses system resources; turn off if you do not need it.
Audio to recordGame audio only, or game + microphone.
Video frame rate30 fps or 60 fps (for video, not screenshots).
Video qualityStandard or high (for video).

None of these affect screenshot quality. Screenshots are always PNG at screen resolution.

Game Bar Not Working? Common Fixes

Game Bar does not open when pressing Windows + G?

  • Check that Game Bar is enabled in Settings (see above).
  • Make sure you are not in a full‑screen app that blocks overlays. Try pressing Windows + D to show desktop, then press Windows + G.
  • Restart your PC.

Game Bar opens but the Capture widget is missing?

  • Click the Widget Menu (grid icon) in the Game Bar toolbar.
  • Ensure Capture is checked. If not, check it.
  • If still missing, click Store (shopping bag) to reinstall the Capture widget.

Screenshots are black or blank?

  • Some apps (Netflix, Hulu, DRM content) block even Game Bar. This is intentional. Use your phone camera as a last resort.
  • For regular games, update your graphics driver.
  • Try running the game in windowed mode instead of exclusive full‑screen. Then use Snip & Sketch instead.

Game Bar screenshots are blurry?

  • Game Bar captures at your screen resolution. Make sure your display is set to its native resolution.
  • PNG files should not be blurry. If they are, the original game may be rendering at a lower resolution.

Can You Take Game Bar Screenshots on a Laptop?

Yes. Laptop keyboards sometimes have different key combinations. Windows Key + G works on all Windows laptops. If your laptop has a Fn key, you may not need it. Just press Windows + G.

If the Game Bar does not appear, check your laptop’s gaming mode settings. Some brands (e.g., ASUS, Dell) have their own overlay that may conflict. Disable those overlays temporarily.

How to Access Your Screenshots from Inside Game Bar

You do not need to open File Explorer. From the Game Bar overlay:

  1. Press Windows + G.
  2. In the Capture widget, click Show all captures (folder icon with a plus sign, or the “See all captures” link).
  3. A small window opens showing your recent screenshots and videos.
  4. Click any screenshot to open it. Right‑click for options: Open, Copy, Delete, Go to folder.

This is the fastest way to view your most recent captures.

The Bottom Line

Using game bar for screenshots is the best method for capturing full‑screen games and apps that resist normal screenshot tools. Press Windows Key + G, click the camera icon, and your screenshot saves automatically to the Videos > Captures folder. You can change the save location in Settings. If Game Bar does not work, check that it is enabled. Use Snip & Sketch or Windows + PrtSc for desktop and window captures.

Game Bar is not just for gamers. Next time a program blocks your screenshot, try Game Bar. It often works.
