Perplexity is moving its agentic AI capabilities from the cloud to the local machine with the launch of “Personal Computer,” now available in early access by invite only. The tool gives AI agents local access to your files and apps, allowing them to perform tasks based on high-level objectives rather than specific commands .
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Product | Perplexity Personal Computer |
| Availability | Early access (invite only) |
| Platform | Runs on Mac Mini (local) |
| Access | Remote login from any device |
| Key Feature | AI agents access local files and apps |
| Inspiration | Similar to open-source OpenClaw |
| Safety Features | User approval, audit trail, kill switch |
| Also Announced | Enterprise version, API access |
Last month, Perplexity announced the confusingly named “Computer”—its cloud-based agent tool for completing tasks using multiple AI models . This week, the company is moving that functionality to the desktop with the equally confusingly named “Personal Computer” .
Unlike traditional computing where you give specific commands, Personal Computer asks users to describe general objectives :
Running on a Mac Mini, Personal Computer gives Perplexity’s agents local access to your files and apps, which they can open and manipulate directly to attempt completing those tasks .
Perplexity users can also log in remotely to their local copy of Personal Computer, making it “controllable from any device, anywhere” .
This should sound familiar to users of the open-source OpenClaw (previously Moltbot), which similarly allows AI agents loose on personal machines .
From the outside, Personal Computer looks like a more buttoned-up, user-friendly version of the same concept, featuring:
If the prospect of letting “a persistent, digital proxy of you” loose on your private local files is worrying, you’re not alone. Perplexity promises several safeguards :
| Safety Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Secure Environment | Operates with “clear safeguards” |
| User Approval | All “sensitive actions” require user approval |
| Audit Trail | Full session history kept |
| Kill Switch | Emergency stop to prevent escalation |
These are likely necessary, given the surprisingly widespread stories of OpenClaw and other AI tools causing (or nearly causing) irreparable damage when given similar access .
Perplexity isn’t alone in chasing this goal:
| Player | Effort |
|---|---|
| Nvidia | Reportedly working on open-source OpenClaw competitor |
| Startups | Multiple companies building agentic AI tools |
| Established Brands | Various levels of functionality in development |
Without direct “early access” to Personal Computer, it’s hard to know how well Perplexity’s offering moves agentic AI into something casual users can rely on daily .
Perplexity also announced an Enterprise version of the cloud-based Computer agent, which can interact with various corporate apps through connectors .
The company’s platforms are now available via API :
Previously only available through Perplexity’s standard interface, these are now open for developer integration .
