Show Battery Percentage on Mac: Add to Menu Bar in 2 Steps

Why Show Battery Percentage on Your Mac?

Knowing your exact battery percentage helps you plan your work. The battery icon alone gives a rough estimate. Seeing show battery percentage on mac numbers allows you to decide when to plug in, how much time you have left, and whether to enable Low Power Mode.

If your macbook pro battery draining fast after update, the percentage becomes even more critical. You can track how quickly the number drops and identify patterns. For immediate drain fixes, see our pillar post. For understanding battery health, see our MacBook battery health tips (cluster post #7).

The percentage display is purely informational. It does not affect battery life or performance. Therefore, there is no downside to enabling it.

For cycle count and maximum capacity, see our MacBook battery cycle count guide (cluster post #8). For battery replacement signs, see when to replace MacBook battery (cluster post #16).

How to Show Battery Percentage on Mac (macOS Ventura and Later)

Apple moved the battery percentage setting to a new location starting with macOS Ventura (13.0). Here is how to enable it.

  2. Select System Settings.
  3. Click Control Center in the sidebar.

To remove the percentage:
Follow the same steps and toggle Show Percentage to Off.

For a complete guide to macOS battery settings, see our macOS battery settings guide (cluster post #10). For Low Power Mode, see our macOS Low Power Mode explained (cluster post #11).

How to Show Battery Percentage on Older macOS Versions

If you are running macOS Monterey (12.0) or earlier, the setting is in a different location.

For macOS Monterey (12.0):

  1. Click the Apple menu > System Preferences.
  2. Click Dock & Menu Bar.
  3. In the sidebar, select Battery.
  4. Check Show Percentage.

For macOS Big Sur (11.0) and earlier:

  1. System Preferences > Dock & Menu Bar (or Energy Saver on very old versions).
  2. Look for Show battery status in menu bar.
  3. On some older versions, the percentage appears automatically when you enable the battery icon. If not, you may need a third‑party app (not recommended).

Why Your Battery Percentage Might Be Inaccurate

Even with the percentage enabled, the number may not be perfectly accurate. Here is why:

CauseExplanationFix
Recent macOS updateSystem needs time to recalibrate.Wait 2‑3 days.
Battery degradationOld batteries report less accurately.Check cycle count.
Extreme temperaturesHeat or cold affects readings.Let Mac cool to room temperature.
Corrupted SMC (Intel)Power management glitch.Reset SMC (see cluster post #2).
Need calibration (older Macs)Gauge lost sync.Calibrate (pre‑2015 only – see cluster post #9).

If your percentage jumps erratically (e.g., from 40% to 15%), your battery may be failing. Run Apple Diagnostics (restart and hold D). For Intel Macs, also reset SMC (see our Intel Mac SMC reset guide for battery issues – cluster post #2).

For modern MacBooks (2015+), calibration is not needed. See our MacBook battery calibration myths (cluster post #15) for more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why can’t I see “Show Percentage” in System Settings?
You may be on an older macOS version (pre‑Ventura). Use the Monterey/Big Sur method instead. Or update your macOS (see our macOS update guide – placeholder).

Q: Why does my battery percentage drop from 20% to 0% instantly?
Your battery may be failing. Check cycle count and maximum capacity. See when to replace MacBook battery (cluster post #16).

Q: Can I add battery percentage to the Touch Bar?
On older MacBook Pro models with Touch Bar, you can customize Control Strip to include battery. However, the percentage may not appear. Use the menu bar instead.

Q: Does Low Power Mode affect how the percentage is displayed?
No. The percentage remains the same. However, the battery icon turns yellow when Low Power Mode is active.
