Smart machines can be unfair. Sometimes they discriminate based on race, gender, or age. This is not because machines are evil. Rather, they learn from biased data. Example 1: Hiring Algorithms
Amazon built a tool to screen job applicants. However, it penalized resumes that included the word “women’s” (e.g., “captain of women’s chess club”). Why? Because the system learned from past resumes, which were mostly from men. Amazon scrapped the tool.
