This PSN cloud saves guide explains how to use PlayStation Plus cloud storage for your game saves. Cloud saves protect your progress if your console breaks or you upgrade to a PS5 Pro or Switch 2. Without cloud backups, a hard drive failure could erase hundreds of hours of gameplay.
Understanding cloud saves ensures your data is always safe. By the end of this guide, you will know how to enable automatic uploads, manage storage space, and troubleshoot sync errors.
Cloud saves are online storage for your game progress files. Sony provides this feature exclusively to PlayStation Plus subscribers.
| Feature | PS Plus Essential | PS Plus Extra | PS Plus Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud save storage | 100 GB | 100 GB | 100 GB |
| Automatic uploads | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Manual uploads | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Cross-console sync (PS4→PS5) | Yes | Yes | Yes |
All three tiers include the same cloud save features. Therefore, you do not need the most expensive plan for backups.
(For PS Plus subscription issues, see our PSN error code NP-34958 guide.)
| Aspect | PS5 | PS4 |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic upload trigger | When console is in Rest Mode | When console is in Rest Mode |
| Manual upload location | Settings > Saved Data > Cloud Storage | Settings > Application Saved Data Management |
| Cross-gen sync | Yes (PS4 saves on PS5) | No (PS5 saves cannot go to PS4) |
| Storage limit | 100 GB shared across both | 100 GB shared |
Cloud saves are tied to your PSN account. Consequently, you can access them on any PlayStation console where you log in.
(For connection issues that may affect sync, see our PS5 connection troubleshooting guide.)
After enabling, your console uploads changed saves once per day during Rest Mode. Ensure your console is set to stay connected to the internet in Rest Mode:
(For Rest Mode network settings, see our PSN router settings guide.)
Sometimes you need to upload or download saves manually. For example, when moving to a new console or restoring a backup.
Manual uploads are useful before lending a console to a friend or performing a factory reset.
Sony provides 100 GB of cloud storage for all your saves. This is shared between PS4 and PS5 games.
| Game Type | Typical Save Size | Number of Saves (100 GB) |
|---|---|---|
| Indie games | 1-5 MB | 20,000+ |
| PS4 AAA games | 10-30 MB | 3,000-10,000 |
| PS5 AAA games | 20-50 MB | 2,000-5,000 |
| Large RPGs (Cyberpunk, Baldur’s Gate) | 50-150 MB | 650-2,000 |
Most users never reach the limit. However, if you have hundreds of games, you might need to manage space.
PS5: Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Cloud Storage > view usage bar at top.
PS4: Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in Online Storage > view available space.
Do not delete saves for games you are still playing. Otherwise, you risk losing progress.
(For more on data management, see our PS5 connection troubleshooting guide.)
| Error Message | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| “Cannot upload due to insufficient cloud storage” | 100 GB limit reached | Delete old saves |
| “Conflicting save data” | Local and cloud saves differ | Choose which version to keep |
| “Upload failed – NP-34958” | PS Plus license issue | Restore licenses (Fix #1) |
| “Sync pending – connect to internet” | Console offline or PSN down | Check PSN status |
| “Save data corrupted” | Local save damaged | Download cloud backup (if available) |
When both local and cloud saves have changed since the last sync, PS5 asks which to keep.
If you are unsure, download the cloud save to a USB drive first as a backup.
(For other error codes, see our PSN error codes guide.)
Scenario A: Console Replacement
Your PS5 breaks and you buy a new one. After logging into your PSN account, you download all cloud saves. Your game progress is fully restored. You lose nothing.
Scenario B: Switching Between PS4 and PS5
You play a PS4 game on your PS4 in the living room. Later, you play the same game on your PS5 in the bedroom. Cloud saves sync automatically. Consequently, you continue exactly where you left off.
Scenario C: Storage Full Error
You receive “insufficient cloud storage” after starting a new RPG. You delete old saves from games you finished years ago. Space frees up. New saves upload successfully.
| Aspect | Cloud Saves | USB Backup (PS4 only) |
|---|---|---|
| Requires PS Plus | Yes | No |
| Automatic | Yes | No |
| Offline access | No | Yes |
| PS5 support | Yes | No (PS5 blocks USB saves) |
| Storage limit | 100 GB | Limited by USB drive size |
PS5 does not allow USB backups for game saves (prevents cheating). Therefore, cloud saves are the only backup option for PS5 users. Always keep PS Plus active.
(For PS Plus subscription management, see our PSN error code NP-34958 guide.)
Mistake #1: Disabling automatic uploads. Then forgetting to upload manually before a console reset. Progress is lost.
Mistake #2: Ignoring storage limit warnings. New saves fail to upload. Old saves remain but new progress is not backed up.
Mistake #3: Choosing the wrong save during conflict resolution. Select the newer one. Otherwise, you lose hours of progress.
Mistake #4: Assuming cloud saves work during a PSN outage. They do not. Therefore, maintain local backups when possible.
Not possible. PS5 saves cannot be transferred to PS4. Games are not backward compatible in that direction.
No. You lose access to cloud storage when PS Plus expires. However, Sony keeps your saves for 6 months. If you resubscribe within that window, your saves return.
No. Cloud saves are locked to the account that created them. Family members cannot access each other’s saves.
Once per day, usually when the console enters Rest Mode. You can also trigger manually.
Yes. Cloud saves are stored on Sony’s servers, not your PC. The fake Windows Update 2026 malware targets Windows computers, not PlayStation consoles. Nevertheless, keep your PSN account secure with two-factor authentication.
This PSN cloud saves guide has shown you how to protect your game progress. Enable automatic uploads immediately. Check your storage space monthly. Resolve sync conflicts by choosing the newer save. For PS5 users, cloud saves are the only backup option.
Cloud saves are a core benefit of PlayStation Plus. Therefore, maintain your subscription. Otherwise, you risk losing hundreds of hours of progress.
