This Tomodachi Life 70 Mii limit guide explains the game’s maximum population cap and how to manage it. Living the Dream allows only 70 Miis per island at any time. This is a reduction from the 3DS original, which supported up to 100 Miis.
Understanding the limit helps you plan your island’s population wisely. You cannot have every Mii you create living simultaneously. By the end of this guide, you will know how to prioritize residents, rotate Miis in and out, and make the most of your 70 slots.
| Aspect | 3DS Original (2014) | Living the Dream (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum Miis | 100 | 70 |
| Island size | Fixed apartment | Fully terraformable island |
| Performance | Occasional slowdown | Smoother performance |
| Mii detail | Basic models | Higher resolution, more animations |
The lower limit is likely due to the increased detail and complexity of the 2026 game. More animations, higher-resolution Mii models, and the terraformed island require more processing power. Nintendo chose quality over quantity.
(For more on island performance, see our Tomodachi Life island customization guide.)
Think of Mii Central as a waiting room. Your island stage only has 70 spots, but the audience can rotate in.
Keep your favorite 30-40 Miis permanently on the island. Rotate the remaining 30-40 slots for new Miis, guests, or experiments.
If you want multi-generational families, reserve slots for:
This easily reaches 50+ Miis. Plan ahead.
Create themed groups (e.g., 70 celebrities, 70 historical figures, 70 family members). Play with one group for a month, then store them and load a new group from Mii Central.
Keep only 20-30 Miis for a tight, focused island. More drama happens with fewer Miis because interactions are less diluted.
(For help creating diverse Miis, see our Tomodachi Life Mii creation guide.)
| Item/Progress | Preserved? |
|---|---|
| Appearance, voice, personality | Yes |
| Relationships (friends, lovers, spouses) | No – relationships are reset |
| Marriage status | No – they become single |
| Children | No – children stay on island (become orphans) |
| Inventory and items | Yes |
| House customization | Yes (restored when moved back) |
Important: Moving a Mii to storage breaks all their relationships. Use this carefully. If you move a married Mii to storage, their spouse remains on the island and becomes single again.
(For relationship management, see our Tomodachi Life relationships and marriage guide.)
Babies count toward the 70 limit as soon as they are born.
To maintain a multi-generational island:
(For baby and family details, see our Tomodachi Life baby and family guide.)
Scenario A: Celebrity Island Overcrowding
You want 100 celebrity Miis, but the limit is 70. Choose your top 70. Store the rest in Mii Central. Every month, swap out 10 celebrities for 10 stored ones. Everyone gets screen time.
Scenario B: Legacy Family Management
Your founding couple has 3 children. Each child marries and has 2 children. That is 2 + 3 + 3 spouses + 6 grandchildren = 14 Miis. Add a few friends and you are at 20. Plenty of room. No need to store anyone.
Scenario C: Rotating Themed Islands
You have 200 Miis stored in Mii Central. Each month, you load a different theme: January = Superheroes, February = Movie Stars, March = Historical Figures. Your active 70 slots rotate completely. The island feels fresh constantly.
Mistake #1: Keeping everyone active forever. You will hit 70 quickly. Use storage rotation.
Mistake #2: Moving a married Mii to storage without realizing it breaks the marriage. The spouse will be heartbroken. Plan separations carefully.
Mistake #3: Forgetting that babies count toward the limit. Leave empty slots if you plan to have children.
Mistake #4: Not using Mii Central at all. Storage is unlimited. Use it liberally.
You cannot. The game hard-caps at 70. However, you can:
(For sharing Miis between profiles, see our Tomodachi Life local wireless multiplayer guide.)
Nintendo has not announced any plans to raise the 70 Mii limit. It is likely permanent.
No. The demo is limited to 3 active Miis. Storage is not available in the demo.
You cannot. The game blocks the move. You must first move an active resident to storage.
Yes. In Mii Central, select a Mii and choose Delete. This removes them completely. Only do this for Miis you never want again.
This Tomodachi Life 70 Mii limit guide has shown you how to manage your island’s population. Keep your favorite 70 active. Store extras in Mii Central. Swap them in and out as you wish. Remember that moving a Mii to storage resets their relationships, so plan carefully.
The 70 limit is manageable. Use rotation strategies. Leave room for babies. And enjoy the performance boost that comes with a smaller, more detailed island.
