Gadgets & Lifestyle for Everyone
This Tomodachi Life island customization guide teaches you how to shape every inch of your Mii paradise. For the first time in the series, you can terraform the land, place buildings anywhere, and design outdoor spaces. Your island is a blank canvas.
Understanding island customization helps you create the perfect environment for your Miis to live, love, and cause drama. By the end of this guide, you will know how to build beaches, mountains, neighborhoods, and landmarks that make your island unique.
The original Tomodachi Life on 3DS had a fixed apartment building and limited outdoor areas. Living the Dream completely overhauls island design.
| Feature | 3DS Original | Living the Dream (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Terrain shaping | None | Full terraforming (raise/lower land) |
| Building placement | Fixed locations | Anywhere on the island |
| Outdoor decorations | None | Trees, flowers, paths, fences, lamps |
| Beach customization | No | Sand shape, palm trees, umbrellas |
| Water features | None | Ponds, rivers, fountains |
| Building exteriors | Pre-set | Custom colors and designs |
These tools let you create a tropical resort, a mountain village, a modern city, or anything in between. (For more on creating Miis to populate your island, see our Tomodachi Life Mii creation guide.)
| Action | Button |

| Enter design mode | X |
| Rotate camera | Right stick |
| Zoom | ZL / ZR |
| Place item | A |
| Delete item | B |
| Change brush size | L / R (for terraforming) |
Terraforming lets you raise and lower land to create hills, valleys, cliffs, and water features.
| Tool | Effect |
|---|---|
| Raise | Increase land height (creates hills) |
| Lower | Decrease land height (creates pits or water) |
| Flatten | Smooth area to current camera height |
| Water | Create ponds, rivers, or lakes |
You can undo any terraforming action. The game saves your island layout automatically when you exit the editor.
You can place the following buildings anywhere on your island:
| Building | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Mii Houses | Homes for your residents |
| Town Hall | Island management |
| Shop | Buy items, clothes, food |
| Restaurant | Dates and meals |
| Amusement Park | Mini-games and events |
| Beach | Swimming and sunbathing |
| Park | Social gatherings |
| School | Children’s education (off-screen) |
| Hospital | Healing sick Miis |
| Observation Tower | View the entire island |
You can move buildings at any time for free. Experiment with different layouts.
(For managing your growing population, see our Tomodachi Life 70 Mii limit guide.)
Decorations make your island feel alive. You can place hundreds of items.
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Trees | Palm, pine, cherry blossom, apple |
| Flowers | Roses, tulips, daisies, sunflowers |
| Paths | Stone, brick, wood, dirt |
| Fences | Wood, iron, bamboo, hedge |
| Lighting | Lamps, lanterns, streetlights |
| Furniture | Benches, tables, signs, fountains |
| Special | Statues, flags, balloons, pinwheels |
Decorations do not affect gameplay, but they make your island more photogenic.
Each building can be customized with different colors and themes.
You can customize each Mii house individually. This helps distinguish residents’ personalities.
(For creating matching outfits for couples, see our Tomodachi Life relationships and marriage guide.)
Scenario A: Tropical Resort Island
You want a vacation paradise. Set ground paint to sand everywhere. Add palm trees, tiki torches, and thatched-roof buildings. Place the beach in the center. Add a large pool (water terraforming). Your Miis will live in perpetual summer.
Scenario B: Mountain Village
Raise the center of your island into a tall mountain. Place houses on the slopes connected by winding paths. Add pine trees and stone fences. Put the observation tower at the peak. Use stone ground paint for a rustic look.
Scenario C: Modern City
Flatten most of the island. Use concrete ground paint. Place buildings in neat grid patterns. Add streetlights, benches, and fountains. Use sleek, modern building themes (glass and steel). Create a central park with grass and trees for contrast.
Mistake #1: Terraforming too aggressively. Drastic changes can make buildings look out of place. Make small adjustments over time.
Mistake #2: Blocking paths. Ensure there is always a walkable route between buildings. Miis cannot climb cliffs.
Mistake #3: Over-decorating. Too many items can slow the game and make navigation confusing. Less is often more.
Mistake #4: Ignoring the coast. The beach is a prime location for relaxation. Develop it with umbrellas and lounge chairs.
Your island layout saves automatically. You cannot directly share your island design online, but you can:
(For local wireless sharing, see our Tomodachi Life local wireless multiplayer guide.)
No. The island name is permanent. Choose carefully when you first start the game.
Yes. Miis prefer flat, open areas. They avoid steep cliffs and deep water. Keep main pathways flat.
The game has a soft limit of 500 decorations. After that, performance may slow. The game warns you when you approach the limit.
Yes. The editor has an undo button (ZR). You can undo up to 20 actions.
This Tomodachi Life island customization guide has shown you how to design your perfect Mii paradise. Use terraforming to shape hills and water. Place buildings strategically. Add decorations for personality. Customize exteriors to match your theme.
Your island is a reflection of your creativity. Experiment freely. Change things often. And enjoy watching your Miis explore the world you built.
