This Tomodachi Life Mii creation guide walks you through every customization option in the new game. The 2026 sequel offers the most detailed Mii editor ever. You can adjust eyelid creases, draw custom face paint, and choose from three gender options.
Creating great Miis is the foundation of your island experience. The more personality you give them, the more entertaining their lives become. By the end of this guide, you will know how to design unique characters that will generate hilarious drama for years.
The original Tomodachi Life on 3DS had basic Mii tools. Living the Dream completely overhauls the editor.
| Feature | 3DS Original | Living the Dream (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Gender options | Male / Female | Male / Female / Non-binary |
| Hair colors | 8 solid colors | 16 colors + two-tone support |
| Eye customization | Preset shapes | Adjustable angles, size, and creases |
| Mouth shapes | Preset | Adjustable width and curve |
| Face paint | None | Draw directly on face |
| Voice pitch | Basic slider | Advanced pitch + resonance |
These new tools let you create Miis that look like real people, fictional characters, or hilarious abominations. (For more on how Miis interact, see our Tomodachi Life relationships guide.)
The game offers two ways to start:
Recommendation: Use Advanced Studio for main characters. Use Quick Creation for background residents.
This is the most important step. You can choose:
After selecting gender, set Dating Preferences. You can choose attraction to:
You can select none, one, two, or all three options. This allows for asexual, heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and pansexual representation.
The facial editor has several tabs:
| Tab | What You Can Adjust |
|---|---|
| Head shape | Round, oval, square, heart-shaped |
| Eyes | Angle, separation, size, eyelid crease |
| Eyebrows | Thickness, angle, distance from eyes |
| Nose | Width, length, nostril shape |
| Mouth | Width, curve, lip thickness |
| Ears | Size, angle, lobe shape |
Take your time with eyes and mouth. These define your Mii’s personality.
Hair options include:
Face paint is new. You can draw directly on your Mii’s face using a stylus or finger. Draw freckles, scars, glasses, makeup, or even a mustache.
For the first time in the franchise, you can create non-binary Miis. Here is how it works:
This feature was the number one request from fans of the 3DS original. (Learn how relationships develop in our Tomodachi Life marriage guide.)
Scenario A: Creating Your Family
You want to put your real family on the island. Use the Advanced Studio to match eye shapes, hair colors, and face shapes. Add custom face paint for distinctive features like glasses or beauty marks.
Scenario B: Making a Celebrity Mii
You want to add your favorite singer. Search online for a reference photo. Match the eye angle, mouth curve, and hair style. Use two-tone hair if they have highlights. Adjust voice pitch to match their speaking voice.
Scenario C: Creating a Fantasy Character
You want a goblin-like Mii. Use green skin tone (available in face paint), large ears, wide nose, and a pointy mouth. Add face paint wrinkles and scars. Give them a deep, raspy voice.
The 2026 game does not support direct transfer from the 3DS version. However, you can:
For local sharing, both players need the game. Go to Mii Central > Share > Local Wireless. You can send and receive individual Miis or entire families. (Our local wireless guide explains this in detail.)
Mistake #1: Making every Mii look perfect. Imperfections (crooked noses, uneven eyes) make characters more memorable and their drama funnier.
Mistake #2: Forgetting to set dating preferences. If you leave them blank, the Mii will never fall in love. This is fine for children or ace characters, but not for most residents.
Mistake #3: Using the same voice for everyone. Vary pitch and resonance to make conversations more interesting.
Mistake #4: Not using face paint. Even small details like freckles or a beauty mark add personality.
The maximum number of Miis on a single island is 70. This is lower than the 3DS original (100 Miis). Plan your island population carefully.
You can store additional Miis in Mii Central (a separate area) and swap them in and out. This lets you cycle through more than 70 characters over time. (See our 70 Mii limit guide for management tips.)
No. Gender and dating preferences are locked after you confirm creation. Delete and remake the Mii if you need to change these.
Yes. Go to Mii Central > select the Mii > Edit Mii. You can change hair, face paint, voice, catchphrase, and clothing. You cannot change gender, dating preferences, or facial structure.
The free Welcome Version demo includes the full Mii creation tools. You can create up to three Miis and transfer them to the full game.
Nintendo has not announced any transfer feature. For now, manual recreation is the only option.
This Tomodachi Life Mii creation guide has shown you how to build unique, memorable residents for your island. Use the new face paint tools. Experiment with two-tone hair. Set dating preferences carefully. And do not be afraid to add imperfections.
Great Miis lead to great drama. Spend time in the editor. Your island will thank you.
